Plastic undergoes a chemical change during its manufacture which creates long-chain polymers. This is a one-way process. Once these chains have been made, they are very stable and do not degrade easily, so plastic lasts a long long time. They are also inedible, so no type of life will break the plastic down. Some plastics will degrade when exposed to sunlight, but a rubbish dump strewn with plastic is not a pretty sight. There are some new biodegradable plastics, but they are not very common yet.
