Goaty is spot on. Cottage Pie is always minced beef and Shepherd's Pie is always minced lamb. These dishes were made from the leftovers of a Sunday roast. The only source I have is that I am a brilliant cook!!

This came up on Quizmail a year ago. In the end they had to accept both answers as many reference books say that the terms are interchangable.

In a private (snail)mail - Dave (Quizmail) admitted to using only one reference and the derivation of each name had not been fully researched and as there were a large number of objections/queries had accepted both answers. Shepherds (SHEEP)Pie is technically made only from Lamb Meat. Cottage Pie - Any other meat, or can contain no meat only vegetables. Spent hours researching this one a long time ago!
