According to the Shell Book of Firsts, it was in 1857 that Joseph Gayetty of New York City produced Gayetty's Medicated Paper in 500-sheet packages as a 'perfectly pure article for the toilet and the prevention of piles'. Cost 50 cents. The first toilet roll appeared in 1871 courtesy of Seth Wheeler of New York but we Brits didn't catch on to the idea until 1879 when Walter Alcock produced the first toilet roll in Great Britain. Incidentally, I can't give a source for this but I recall reading that Queen Victoria refused to use toilet paper. Instead she used The Times newspaper which was printed on specially thin paper.

reading the toilet paper package, so the idea for this quiz was born.
