Where I come from, (Ireland) 'the prom' is a long stone seafront with a walk along the top of it, where people can take an early evening stroll. Is this what you are talking about?

What lancelover is talking about here is a formal dance held for the graduating class of an American high school or college, but most likely high school. It is short for promenade (a ball or dance) but nobody uses that anymore that I know of. You would say, Are you going to the prom? just as you would ask, Are you going to the dance?
