What was the bloodiest single day in U.S. history?

Question #18506. Asked by Baby Smack.

    Roxanne33

It seems the Battle of Antietam, September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest with more than 4,000 people killed. Although the number varies from one web site to another.

I have got a bigger number of casualties from

The most casualties America had ever suffered in one day was the Battle of Antietum - some 24,000. Of course, the Civil War numbers are so high because both sides were counted in the totals.

I believe the second figure is casualties, which includes those wounded and missing. More men were killed or wounded on that day than on any other single day of the Civil War: some 12,400 Federal and 10,300 Confederate troops were casualties in about twelve hours of ferocious combat. The chaos of battle makes it exceedingly difficult to develop precise numbers, but overall, 1 in 4 soldiers involved in battle on September 17, 1862 were killed, wounded, or missing.

Casualties bleed whether they are dead or not. The question related to bloodiest day and not the most killed.

I was not trying to argue with anyone, merely explaining the reason for the difference in the two figures.
