More seriously, this is a common symptom of migraine - aura, for some patients, are (yes that's the correct tense) enhanced when looking at brightly coloured or intricate materials, which would include paintings. I certainly can't look at geometric patterns when suffering the beginnings of an attack, they make me very nauseous.
