Seventy five sents (1.75 + 0.75 = 2.50)

Years ago when I was a lad I was taught that the easiest way to solve this sort of question is to set aside the smaller amount, and divide the remainder by two. So you set aside {$1} which leaves {$1.50} and divide by two which gives {$0.75.} Thus the pencil costs {$0.75} on its own, and the pen is {$1.75.} QED.
