Years ago when I was a lad I was taught that the easiest way to solve this sort of question is to set aside the smaller amount, and divide the remainder by two. So you set aside {\$1} which leaves {\$1.50} and divide by two which gives {\$0.75.} Thus the pencil costs {\$0.75} on its own, and the pen is {\$1.75.} QED.
