    Why is Ludwig van Beethoven called VAN rather than VON Beethoven?

    Although Beethoven was born in Germany, his ancestors were Flemish. In the Flemish language, the prefix for 'of the family of' is 'Van'.

    I disagree. I thought Beethoven was born in Austria therefore Van is Austrian

    Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. His grandfather was Flemish. Source Encyclopaedia Britannica CD98.
