You need to be more specific - do you mean the original or Tim Burton's version? In the original CHarlton Heston sees the statue of liberty covered with sand and realises that he has travelled not in space but in time and that there has been a nuclear explosion, man has re-eveolved into an ape...

To be more specific about the original: due to a nuclear holocaust, apes have evolved to be intelligent and humans have evolved into dumb creatures.
