Does anyone know please how the points work this year in the County Cricket Championship. There seems to be a deduction of points for something. I see Surrey have scored 39.75 from two matches, ie have had a quarter of a point taken away. is this for slow over rate perhaps. How does it work. Any thoughts appreciated?

The deduction is indeed for slow over rate. This year it is based on the Australian system of penalising teams in each match rather than over a season. The penalty is 0.25 points for every over below 16 per hour (average) per match. The reason for the change is to avoid unscrupulous captains upping the overrate by using 'comedy bowlers' in (for instance) a rain affected match which is clearly heading for a draw - thus moving the season average above the penalty threshold. All the current points system can be found at cricinfo http://www-uk7.cricket.org/link_to_database/ARCHIVE/2002/ENG_LOCAL/CC1/CC1_TABLE_2002.html
