I thought that was an 'by invitation only' auction. If members of the public have {$82.5} million to spend, I am mixing with the wrong kind of public.

The Guinness Book of Records agree with makebeleaffan about the title but with SOTHC with the amount. Portrait of Dr Gachet by Vincent van Gogh sold at Christie's in New York in May 1990 for {$82.5} million or 49.1 million pounds sterling. It depicts Van Gogh's doctor and was completed weeks before the artist's suicide in 1890
