Thomas Edison is typically credited with inventing the light bulb, but that's not true. Name the person who patented the light bulb a year before he began working with Edison.

A student in my history class insists Edison was first to invent something to do with using gas for lighting but I know he did electrical stuff like the bulb and electric chair and I think that Napoleon used gas lighting and London Bridge was lit by gas long before Edison was born. Can anyone throw more light on this so I can put this clever clogs in her place please?
