RE- Oscar Swahn - Guiness book of Records says he was 73 in 1920 and only won the silver medal. The oldest Gold medal winner is not listed in my volumes. (a lot of them when the Guiness was a reference book and not a publicity stunt!)

I'm finding Sir Eyre Massey Shaw winning an Olympic gold medal at age 78 for yachting in 1900, yet there are references saying no gold medals were given out in 1900. 1900 Eyre M Shaw, 78, becomes oldest gold medalist in the Olympics. http://www.globalseek.net/ToDaY/MaY/may25.html No gold medals were given out in Paris. Winners received silver medals with bronze for second place. http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0114360.html 'After all, Sir Eyre Massey Shaw won a gold medal for yachting in the 1900 games at the age of 70, and a presidential candidate in 1996 was in his 70s.' http://www.lef.org/newsarchive/aging/2001/08/16/l/0000-0013-graying-fam.html Tue May 21 02:27:04 CDT 2002 (Delete Entry) Winter Games: Oldest Olympic gold medalist: 48 years 357 days, Jay O'Brien (USA, Four-Man Bobsled, 1932) Oldest Olympic gold medalist (Women): 39 years 354 days, Raisa Smetanina (EUN, 4x5-Kilometer Relay, Nordic Skiing, 1992) http://usocpressbox.org/usoc/pressbox.nsf/2dec1f0f6257333e872568aa00711d87/a845a980ff0426d887256a1d00568bd9?OpenDocument Tue May 21 01:56:00 CDT 2002 (Delete Entry) (Reposted as one entry - McG)
