How old was the oldest person to win a gold medal in the modern Olympics...what year...what event?

    Question #18948. Asked by boyscout.

The Swede Oscar Swahn was 64 years 257 days old when he won a shooting gold medal at the 1912 Olympics as part of the Swedish running deer single-shot team.

RE- Oscar Swahn - Guiness book of Records says he was 73 in 1920 and only won the silver medal.
The oldest Gold medal winner is not listed in my volumes. (a lot of them when the Guiness was a reference book and not a publicity stunt!)

I'm finding Sir Eyre Massey Shaw winning an Olympic gold medal at age 78 for yachting in 1900, yet there are references saying no gold medals were given out in 1900.

1900 Eyre M Shaw, 78, becomes oldest gold medalist in the Olympics.

No gold medals were given out in Paris. Winners received silver medals with bronze for second place.

'After all, Sir Eyre Massey Shaw won a gold medal for yachting in the 1900 games at the age of 70, and a presidential candidate in 1996 was in his 70s.'
