When I was young (in the fifties) in New Zealand there used to be sections in some of the big shops called the 'Manchester' deptartment. I think it was where they sold bed linen etc. Does anybody know if this term was used then or is it my memory going haywire?

Need to do some deep digging on this one but I beleive the reference comes from Manchester and the NorthWest of England being the Cotton goods centre of the entire universe in the 18/1900's (shame it's not any more)

As a fellow Kiwi growing up in the fifties I remember Manchester Departments very well and yes it does refer to bed linen, table cloths and General household linens etc.....
