Tracked it back to 1988 so far with 'The World Championship Cheese Contest' In 1988, the growing contest gained its current name due to the addition of a judging class for pasteurized process cheese and cheese food. By this time, cheeses were judged in 15 classes, including additions for flavored natural cheeses, Baby Swiss, String Cheese and dessert cheeses. The contest surpassed a milestone 500 entries in 1988. Julie Hook's triumph in 1982 was followed by World Champion honors for Roland Tess, Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative, Kiel, Wisconsin for cheddar in 1984. Wisconsin again captured the World Champion title in 1988 with String cheese produced by Dale Olson, Burnett Dairy Cooperative, Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

The first string cheese was supposedly made in Syria – a country in Asia. There are also hints that the string cheese was brought to Syria by the Armenians, (Indo-European people) which became known as Halabi cheese.
