The four original NHL teams were the Montréal Canadiens, Toronto Arenas, Ottawa Senators, and Montréal Wanderers, in 1917. The so-called "Original Six" of Detroit Red Wings, Montréal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs only came about after several teams folded (e.g. Montréal Maroons, New York/Brooklyn Americans, Ottawa Senators/St. Louis Eagles) in the 1930s and 40s, and lasted as a six-team league from 1942-1967. -see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_National_Hockey_League
