Fourteen of our 45 vice presidents have become President - Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren, Tyler, Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman, Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Ford, and Bush. Of those, nine have succeeded to the presidency on the death or resignation of the president and only five have made it on their own, and the first two of those - Adams and Jefferson - were before they changed the rules that gave the second place finisher in the presidential race the V.P. spot. Since 1804, when deliberately bland choices became the norm in V.P. selection, only three veeps - Van Buren, Nixon, and Bush - have achieved the presidency on their own. http://www.catsdogs.com/veepquiz.cgi
