What European capital celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1951?

    Question #19347. Asked by pirate.

    Son of The Household Cavalry

You could argue that Colchester fits the question http://www.manotick.org/stjames/Archival%20pages/dorothy%20sayers.htm
Dorothy L Sayers wrote in 1951 The Emperor Constantine. This pageant was commissioned to celebrate the 2000th anniversary of the city of Colchester, the presumed birthplace of Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine. - Colchester was one of the most important Iron Age settlements in Britain, Capital of the major pre-Roman power, King Cunobelin of the Catuvellauni and the Trinovantes

I live in Colchester and it has never been a city although it's forerunner Camulodunum was. I'm not nitpicking, it just doesn't answer the question

It's in Europe,it was a capital and celebrated it's 2000th anniversary in 1951. Which bit does not fit the question the Gorm?

Thanks for your help, guys. Your suggestion seemed a bit obscure for the level of the rest of the quiz I am doing...did some more research and it seems that Paris celebrated its 2000th anniversary in August 1951, in part by planting marigolds!

SOTHC, I think you owe someone a small apology.

It is a town not a city - given borough status by Richard I in 1189

It doesn't really matter whether it is a city although http://www.city-visitor.com/colchester/ would suggest it is and my first answer was taken from the website http://www.manotick.org/stjames/Archival%20pages/dorothy%20sayers.htm. Where does it say city in the question? I did say you could argue that Colchester could be the answer as the explanations, given, fit the question. I wouild agree that the more likely answer is probably Paris, but why should I apologise for giving an answer that is not wrong.

Yes, I take your point on city but who asked for an apology?

    It was mibmob's suggestion.
Anyway this is getting far too serious for me. I am not used to being serious for too long, so shall we all agree on Paris and leave Colchester alone?
