What length is the longest non-articulated truck allowed on the road in the UK?

I'm not sure whether there is an actual legal limit to length but I can tell you that special permission has to be obtained from the highway authority before 'abnormal and indivisible loads' (as they are termed in law) are allowed on Britain's highways. Normally such loads have to be escorted for the whole length of their journey. The source for this is my own knowledge as I formerly worked for the Department of Transport.
