Crisps (or chips if you are from th west side of the pond). The crisp was invented in 1853 by George Crum. Mr Crum was an American-Indian Chief who was employed to work in a posh restaurant in Saratoga, New York State. When one Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railway magnate, ordered pommes frites he was dismayed to see that they were not cut thinly enough. He sent back the chips no less than three times, demanding that they should be thinner each time. So the proud Indian Chief finally got so annoyed with this that he cut the potatoes into wafer-thin slices and then tossed them into boiling oil till they were crisp and golden.

Toboggan Toboggan comes from the Algonquian word odabaggan. The toboggan is an invention of the Eastern First Peoples. Indian hunters first built toboggans made of bark to carry game over the snow. The Inuit (sometimes called Eskimos) used to make toboggans of whalebone, otherwise a toboggan is made of strips of hickory, ash, or maple, with the front ends curved back.
