Eratoshenes of Cyrene (276 BC - 194 BC), a Greek philosopher, not only knew that the world was round, but he measured the circumference of it in about the third century BC. He did this by measuring the lengths of shadows in two places far distant from each other, based on the assumption that the sun was very far away.
