The four countries of theh UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)have separate international football teams. On June 29, 1950, the USA beat England 1-0 in a World Cup match in Brazil.

I am old enough to remember the USA beating England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup and there are no excuses. England should have won easily and when the result came through one English newspaper assumed the result was actually 1-10 in England's favour and printed this as the score. On the day we were beaten fair and square, albeit by an inferior team, and we have never forgotten the shame of it. We also put out the strongest team we could muster, so the result was entirely fair. We have played the USA once since then, when we won 6-3 (I'm sorry to say I can't recall the exact year but it was a 'friendly' international so it wasn't at the highest level).
