Have the US and UK ever met in an important soccer (football) match?

Question #19939. Asked by Pele. (Jun 18 02 8:50 AM)

The four countries of theh UK (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland)have separate international football teams.

On June 29, 1950, the USA beat England 1-0 in a World Cup match in Brazil.

I am old enough to remember the USA beating England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup and there are no excuses. England should have won easily and when the result came through one English newspaper assumed the result was actually 1-10 in England's favour and printed this as the score. On the day we were beaten fair and square, albeit by an inferior team, and we have never forgotten the shame of it. We also put out the strongest team we could muster, so the result was entirely fair. We have played the USA once since then, when we won 6-3 (I'm sorry to say I can't recall the exact year but it was a 'friendly' international so it wasn't at the highest level).

The 6-3 result was at New York on 8-June-1953. According to the Rothmans Football Yearbook, England and the USA played each other on 7 occasions, the other 5 being:-
8-1 on 28-May-1959 at Los Angeles
10-0 on 27-May-1964 at New York
5-0 on 16-Jun-1985 at Los Angeles
    0-2 on 9-June-1993 at Foxboro
    2-0 on 7-Sept-1994 at Wembley

    Scotland have played them twice:
    6-0 30-Apr-1952 at Glasgow
    1-0 17-May-1992 at Denver

Wales and Northern Ireland have not played the USA, either an important match or a friendly.
