Proper footballers have not (to my knowledge) ever worn helmets. Some have worn protective face masks - specifically to protect 'healing' injuries to the cheekbone or eye socket - most notably Gary Mabbutt and the Japanese centre back at this years World Cup. Goalies of course occasionally wear caps but these are not for protective purposes. Jun 27 02, 12:40 PM
