Technically must pollution be man made?
Question

Of course not - what about the stuff that spewed out of Mount Helena a few years back?

Lava is not pollution, ultimately it cools to help form new life. Many islands were formed from volcano eruptions.

What about the gases released - the so-called greenhouse effect? Meteorologists blamed the eruptions for the weather patterns in following years. Was there a suggestion that it caused El Nino?

Yes, Volcanos certainly damage human communities, but they have been erupting for millions of years...all apart of the world's ecosystem. And the major factor in the Greenhouse Effect is definitely smog.
