Is their a mid-summer holiday in Britian?

Question #20347. Asked by Alexander Hamilton.

We have the Spring Bank Holiday at the start of June, which is about as near to mid-summer as it gets... We have another such holiday in the last week in August, but that's nearer to Autumn....

To be mid-summer it would have to be between 3 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon on the day we have our summer. This may not be the case every year as summer is sometimes cancelled all together

On the assumption that you are referring to a statutory holiday then the answer is most definitely no. We have the Spring Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May and the August Bank Holiday Monday at the very end of August although a while back it used to occur on the first Monday in August.

Technically, Summer is the season between June 21 and September 21. Right now we are suffering in the States in a very hot and humid HEAT wave...my God! give us some of that cold Canadian or Scottish weather PLEASE!!!

Bill, your dates of 21 June to 21 September for Summer seem to apply in the States, and also in some countries of Southern Europe, but in many parts of Europe, Summer is much earlier. There are no 'official' dates for Summer in the UK, but most people accept the months of June, July and August. In Ireland, the official dates for Summer are May, June and July, but in actual fact a more realistic set of dates would be mid-May to mid-August. I believe that before the 11 days were dropped from the calendar in the 18th century, the May-July range would have been more reasonable.

Despite all this, in the UK, 24 June is known as 'Midsummer's Day' and has been for centuries. This is not celebrated as a statutory holiday.

According to my desk Diary:( Niceday by Guilbert )
Summer began on Sunday 31st March and ends on Sunday 22nd September with Midsummers day on 24th June.
Here in the UK we get less Bank Holidays than the rest of the world !!

What is the Midsummer Dream Game?

Why is the midsummer soltice called midsummer when it is also the first day of summer? I have read somewhere that it is referring to the fact that it is the peak of summer not the exact middle of summer, but surely this would still be July?

In A Midsummer Night's dream, how many named roles are there? Also, how many named roles are female? Hint: it is found in the introduction of Shakespeare's books (Signet Classic).

In "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Puck claimed he could girdle the world in how many minutes? What would happen if he reached enough speed to enable him to do that?
