If Edward had remained King after marrying Mrs Simpson (no children during the marriage) - who would be the monarch in the UK now. I've heard the answer - but still can't work it out. Any offers for the definitive answer?

    Question #20372. Asked by Siskin.

The answer is Queen Elizbeth II. You exhaust the male line, in this case Edward VIII's, then go to the next oldest male - his brother Albert George (George VI) who had two children. The eldest child would become the sovereign.

Any chance we could stick to the question in hand without engaging in warfare?
    Thank you.
I heard the answer as Queen Elizabeth 11 - but it was also argued as the Duke of Gloucester being correct. Any thoughts on that one?

The Duke of Gloucester was the younger brother of the Duke of York (Albert George), therefore the crown would pass to the Duke of York's heirs until that line was exhausted. But as we know Elizabeth II has an heir and other children. The Duke of Gloucester would only have come into the picture if the Duke of York had died before him and had no children.

Thank you CC. It makes perfect sense now.

To add my two penn'orth, when the abdication (of Edward VIII) was first mooted as a real possibility there were serious discussions on whether the Duke of Gloucester should take the throne rather than his elder brother the Duke of York. This was because Albert Duke of York was thought not to be up to the job. But as things turned out, all was well and he made an excellent King.

If Edward and Mrs. Simpson are who I was asking a question about, you sure did got through alot of bull just to answer one simple question. Though I do not think he cared if his older brother became king or not, he got more, he had true love, and happiness. That should be more important than any throne.
