If the matter density in the universe is above a certain critical value, then the universe will continue to expand until a certain point, then gravity will stop the expansion and cause it to contract again. All the galaxies will come back together and eventually the entire universe will end in a big crunch. In this case, time will end at the big crunch, just as it started at the big bang. So time will bi finite. If the matter density is less than the critical value, there will not be enough matter in the universe to halt the expansion, so it will continue to expand forever and time will be infinite. Scientists have not decided which of these two is the likely fate of the universe, but it seems that the second one is more likely at present.
