Rimmer: Well you would, Lister, because you've got no ambition, no drive! You're perfectly content to be the lowest rank on this ship. Lister: I'm not 'the lowest rank on this ship'! What about the laboratory mice? I tell those mice to do somethin', they've got to jump to it! 'Yes, Mr Lister, sir! Ee-ee-ee!' Red Dwarf, episode 1 series 1, The End. Since circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, there really is no one person at the bottom. When you think things could not possible get worse, they can and do, repeatedly. I know, I wrote the book on that observation and continue to write many sequels. So remember, if you think you have it bad, just think how much worse it could be. That's what I try to do.

The point of the Red Dwarf quote and the Blackadder reference (because I can't find the relevant quote right now) is that no matter how far down the chain you are, there will always be someone else you can dump on. Even if you are at the bottom there will be some way of offloading onto someone else equally (or less) misfortunate. The lab mice will bully another lab mouse who will take it out on some poor scientist by running the wrong way round the maze and screwing up six months' research...
