Was Bruno Hauptman guilty of the crime of kidnap and murder of the Lindburgh Baby, or did the State of New Jersey execute an innocent man?

Question #20764. Asked by Bryce. (Jul 19 02 4:02 AM)

    This might help.....
1936 Bruno Hauptmann, killer of the Lindbergh baby, is executed.
Did Hauptman do it? It really depends on which Discovery Channel
program you watch. Like JFK, and others, there always seems to
be a conspiracy theory, and someone else to say 'they did it.' I
suggest that you do a search on the www to find out how really
popular the topic is and has been for the past years!

My late uncle, Mike Dwyer, was one of Bruno Richard Hauptman's
prison guards and spent hours chatting with him. Mike could
never be convinced that Hauptman really kidnaped and murdered
the Lindbergh baby. I remember when I was a teenager, he told my
family that he thought Hauptman was covering for his wife who
was somehow involved. Hauptman was convicted and executed for
    the crime.

This of course is a question which will never now be answered. I think I am correct in saying that Hauptman's widow died only quite recently and the controversy came to the fore once again. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that an innocent man may have been executed but there must have been enough proof at the time to secure a conviction. I suppose this is another reason for saying that the death penalty is wrong.
