20789 On 20 January 1936, George V died and the Prince of Wales was proclaimed king. On 11 December Edward VIII abdicated in favour of his brother, the Duke of York, who immediately became King George VI http://www.xrefer.com/entry/172011

Under constitutional law, when the sovereign dies the next in line automatically succeeds to the throne. Hence the saying: 'The king is {dead;} long live the king'. Edward VIII became king on his father George V's death and continued to reign until his abdication.

He would not have been known as Edward VIII if he had not been king for less than a second!
