I was only taking bets and did not place one. I broke even as there were a few joint favourites. If you search using 'biggest employer in the world' you get quite a few: - The Indian Railway Company claims to be the biggest employer in the world - 1.65 million people work there. members.tripod.co.uk/uditpatidar/first.html China Petro-Chemical Corporation is the biggest employer in the world according to www.smartregion.com.au/redlands/smart_business/ smart_business.asp The US Federal government is the single biggest employer in the world according to www.smarttech.com/company/mediacenter/ press/releases/woffice.asp

I did a lot of research on this once in order to answer a question. As I remember it, Wal-mart's US employees number around 900,000 - more than twice as much as the next US company (which I think was IBM). But furthermore, they employ around 400,000 more in their foreign subsidiaries, making them the largest US employer of non-US employees. Sorry, I can't quote a source but I really don't feel like doing it all over again!
