Catherine de Medici of Florence took her cooks and sorbetto recipes with her when she married Henry II and became Queen of France in 1533. Charles I of England is then thought to have purchased the formula for 'frozen milk' from a French chef in the 17th Century. As they spread through the royal houses of Europe, eggs and cream also began to be added, and the frozen delicacies came to be known as 'cream ices'. http://www.deepsouthnz.co.nz/fun_sthfl.htm Lots more interesting information on this site for you .....Have a read......

Except for when the first cow got stuck in a glacier - The origins of ice cream go way back to the 4th century B.C. when the Roman emperor Nero ordered ice to be brought from the mountains and combined it with fruit toppings. In the 13th century, Marco Polo learned of the Chinese method of creating ice and milk mixtures and brought it back to Europe. Over time, people created recipes for ices, sherbets, and milk ices. It became a fashionable treat in Italy and France, and once imported to the United States, ice cream was served by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Dolley Madison. Jefferson's favorite flavor was vanilla. http://www.americaslibrary.gov/pages/jb_0723_icecream_2.html

http://www.foodsci.uoguelph.ca/dairyedu/ichist.html goes into the history and points out that 'Commercial production was begun in North America in Baltimore, Maryland, 1851, by Mr. Jacob Fussell, now known as the father of the American ice cream industry' but he was not the inventor as claimed in the first reply.

http://chinesefood.about.com/library/weekly/aa070601a.htm I heard this on the radio on the way to work the other day. Their source claimed it was Chinese in origin and you can read in detail at above address. Ice Cream %96 The Chinese Connection It's true - the Chinese are thought to have invented the first frozen ice concoction around 2,000 B.C., either by leaving it outdoors in the cold mountain winds or by freezing the ingredients in a mixture of ice and coarse salt. Furthermore, there is a theory that iced dairy products were introduced to the west by travelers returning from China.
