Named after Queen Elizabeth I - the 'Virgin Queen'. Others will find some sites for this.

According to Brewer's Dictionary of Names there is documentary evidence that, when the first unsuccessful attempt to colonizise was made in 1584 at Roanoke Island, the name Virginia was given by Elizabeth I herself. It may have been her intention to refer to it as the newly claimed virgin land rather than her own claimed virginity. The first child born in America to English parents was named Virginia Dare in 1587 on Roanoke Island which is now in North Carolina
