WHY do they call French poodles French, when actually they are German?

Question #21017. Asked by Lenny. (Jul 31 02 6:54 AM)

    Siskin

The breed name probably stems from the German word 'pudel', which means to splash in the water and describes the dogs' affinity for water activity and skill at aquatic retrieval.
Many dog enthusiasts agree that the modern breed emerged in France, where it performed in circuses and worked as a duck retriever.

The original purpose of the topknot was for the owner to keep track of the dog when in the water.

Inspired by the Netherlands question, why in English do we use the term 'Great Britain' as it is only a translation from French, who call both Britain and Brittany Bretagne, and therefore needed to separate the two. As far as I know there are no other Britains so absolutely no need to call our country anything but 'Britain'. So does anyone know why we adopted the name the French use despite having no need to do so?
