From 'The Hutchinson Encyclopedia 2001': The Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazano reached New York Bay in 1524, and Henry Hudson explored it in 1609. The Dutch established a settlement on Manhattan in 1624, and named it New Amsterdam from 1626. This was captured by the English in 1664 and re-named New York.
