    I am taking 'US history Since 1877' and I need to know what was involved in the Ballinger-Pincot Controversy and how did it affect the relationship between Roosevelt and Taft. How did it affect the reputation of Taft as a Progressive?

    Question #21057. Asked by History buff. (Aug 01 02 6:45 PM)

    See A. T. Mason, Bureaucracy Convicts Itself {(1941);}

    I don't know how good you are at using your search engine, but this is a fascinating episode in US history. If you use the Google search engine, enter ballinger +pinchot and you then get some good sites. The best appear to be:

    http://1912.history.ohio-state.edu/conservation/ballinger-pinchot_controversy.htm (good link to Richard Ballinger and more importantly the immediate political consequences)

    http://www.edheritage.org/1910/web/pinchot.htm (concentrates more on Gifford Pinchot and his conservationist policies)

    http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/online_books/utley-mackintosh/interior6.htm (includes background information on conservation generally in the early twentieth century)

    If you do a search like roosevelt +taft +split you start to find sites that explain how the rift between TR and WHT led to Woodrow Wilson winning in 1912 for the Democrats. Ironically, both TR and WHT were seriously compromised by the split. TR was begun to be perceived as too radical whilst Taft was badly hurt by the bad public perception of his handling of the Ballinger-Pinchot controversy. Try the following:

    http://www.americanpresident.org/KoTrain/Courses/WHT/WHT_In_Brief.htm (which explains Taft's shortcomings)

    http://1912.history.ohio-state.edu/TRSeeksGOPNomination.htm (which explains the Republican split of 1912 and has excellent links)

    http://1912.history.ohio-state.edu/Trusts/tr and taft.htm (which shows that the split was coming anyway because the two fell out on other issues).
    Incidentally, you will need to replace the word 'and' with the ampersand sign to access the site.

    But as a student you've got to find someone who can teach you to seek these things out for yourself on the internet. Lots of luck.
