They are 'killers' not because they'd neccessarily harm us humans, but because of their voracious appetites for all things aquatic. See: http://www.whaletimes.org/whakw.htm

It is because Killer whales are the top predators of the sea, which means they eat just about anything and no other animals prey upon them. Here are some examples of foods that this amazing animal eats: seals, penguin, sea lions, squids, shark, walruses, dolphins, tropical turtles, otters, manatees, and sea birds. Killer whales attack humpback whales and grey whales for meat as daily requirements. Killer whales also eat a variety of fish like cod, flatfish, hakes, herring and smelt. These giant creatures hunt in pods for food. In each pod there can be 5 to 50 killer whales. There are not other types of killer whales, but they do have different names like orca, great killer whale and grampus. Killer whales are friendly to humans and have never killed a human http://cragmont.berkeleypta.org/projects/delegeane/Antonio/ANTONIO.htm (student project)
