From The American Zoo and Aquarium Association Bat Taxon Advisory Group comes this:
Walking on the Ground: animal will descend to ground to search for fallen food. Limb sequence is typical for quadrupedal gait and claw of the thumb is used to pull the animal along. While is may be difficult for some species, bats can take off from the ground.

Vampire Bats - Using their sharp teeth, the bats make tiny cuts in the skin of a sleeping animal. The bats' saliva contains a chemical that keeps the blood from clotting. The bats then lap up the blood that oozes from the wound. Another chemical in their saliva numbs the animal's skin and keeps them from waking up. So the bat has to land on the ground, so must be able to take off again!!

Most bats take off by dropping from a hanging position, and many can’t take off from the ground. Bats land by slowing down until they stall and grabbing hold of a branch or other surface. Some bats perform a flip and then grab hold!
In many species, the wings are relatively broad, providing good lift. Shorter-winged species tend to be more maneuverable than longer-winged ones. Many species of flower-visiting bats and some species that take animal prey from the ground can hover. While some species of bats can take off from the ground, those with longer, narrower wings cannot.
