Measuring audience ratings for radios is a lot more difficult than TV. Whereas there is still an overwhelming tendency for TV viewing to be conducted round the 'family' set, this is no longer true for radio, where many listeners are on the move. The black box approach is not really viable because people often listen to more than one radio (eg car, walkman, stereo), and there are so many channels that historically these meters were often found to be listing the next-door channel. Logs are another source of input, but were found to be inaccurate in the 1963 US Conressional Hearings into the study of ratings and their influence upon programming in television. Polls are often used and will be conducted either on a 'man in the street' approach, or on random sampling by telephone which is statistically more accurate. The following is the methodology conducted by one particular company in the US. http://www.eastlan.com/methodology.htm
