As some one who was there ( look up HMS Argonaut exploits ) we were sent to kill and be killed because the Falklands belongs to the UK , the people there think of themselves as British , the same way as Hawaii is American. As such the Government has a duty to protect its citizens, It was thought to be a show of force and they will back down exercise , then the shooting started !. It is not a pleasant experience when you hear 'Air raid warning RED' and the machine guns start firing , especially if one is stuck in a Radar office with nothing else to think about. Still thats what thesetrvices are paid for , so next time there is a conflict think about those in the front line as you watch the action on TV.

The Argentineans invaded the Falkland Islands because the failing military regime thought that a small 'clean' victory in a war would give a breath of fresh air to their government. That is the true reason the justification given by the Argentinean government is that since Argentina independence till 1838 the islands were argentinean territory.

Senior Moments says: http://www.raf.mod.uk/falklands/preface.html will help to explain our reasons Fri Aug 09 01:59:13 CDT 2002 (Delete Entry) Senior Moments addition says: The wording of the question suggests that the UK was at fault. Maybe you should be asking why Argentina decided to take the Islands by force in the first place which resulted in the loss of life.
