    Other than bieng a cloth used to wrap a body for burial or a winding sheet, it could be something that conceals, protects, or screens. For instance - under a shroud of fog. It could also be, nautically, one of a set of ropes or wire cables stretched from the masthead to the sides of a vessel to support the mast, a similar supporting line for a smokestack or comparable structure, or one of the ropes connecting the harness and canopy of a parachute. - http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entries/65/s0376500.html
