    My book club is discussing Shout Fire by Alan Dershowitz on rights and justice. This is a legal question. Before desegregation, did southern states have written codified 'laws' to prevent blacks from sitting in certain areas or using water fountains for whites, or were these 'laws' unwritten and 'generally to be accepted' by southern society?
