    When I went to school (in a previous life) we had to write... The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It contains all letters of the alphabet.

    This type of sentence is called a pangram. The ultimate pangram is one which is only 26 letters long, containing all 26 letters. This has been done, but only by using words that are so obscure that nobody has ever heard of them:

    Cwm fjordbank glyphs vext quiz.

    which means 'inscriptions in hollow on side of inlet puzzled professor'.
