    According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable - John Doe and Richard Doe. Any plaintiff and defendant in a former action of ejectment (brought by a wrongly dispossessed owner seeking to recover possession of his land). They were sham names used to save certain 'niceties of the law'. This legal fiction was abolished by the Common Law Procedure Act, 1852. The names John-a-Nokes and John-a-Stiles were similarly used.
