The day in the eastern hemisphere or left hand side of the international dateline is always a day ahead of the day in the western hemisphere, or right side of the dateline. See: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/international_date.html Since the plane is going west, the birth date is August 19, 2002. If the plane were going east, it would be August 20, 2002.

Sorry to disagree with you and your web site BB but, if it was 12 noon at Greenwich in London UK, noon would already have passed the further east you go. Noon has not yet happened if you go west. Therefore the dateline must vary as plus to the left hand side and minus to the right hand side. If you travel from east to west you gain a day and you lose a day if you travel from west to east.

Right now, I am looking at http://www.worldtimezone.com/ it is just past 9:15 PM August 21, 2002 where I live and is just past 1:15 AM August 22, 2002 GMT which is east from where I live. If you continue going east to the international dateline, it is just past 1:15 PM August 22, 2002. Once you cross the international dateline, it becomes just past 1:15 PM August 21, 2002, 8 hours behind me. Making the eastern hemisphere, left of the international dateline just past 1:15 PM August 22, 2002. Once you cross the dateline, it becomes 1:15 PM August 21, 2002 in the western hemisphere, right of the international dateline. I did make an error as to what the birth date would be. The correct answer, if the plane is traveling west, on August 20, 2002 and the baby is born after crossing the international dateline, the birth date is August 21, 2002. If the baby is born before crossing it, the birth date is August 20, 2002. This is using my source and Friar Tuck's source. Senior Moments says: 'Therefore the dateline must vary as plus to the left hand side and minus to the right hand side.' Brainy Blonde says: To paraphrase, the left hand side of the international dateline is ahead of the right hand side. So, we are all correct with the exception of sundayboy and Ladymacb29 as to the time, but I was in error as to the day. I think that happened because I wasn't looking at a map and was visualizing it in my mind. Friar Tuck's source is far superior to the one I gave. In fact I booked marked it. Is everyone happy with these conclusions? I hope so, because it has given me a headache!!

From the most riddiculous riddles in the world published by Guiness. If it is any hour of the day then it is one day after the day of delivery commencement. If it happens at the stroke of Midnight, it happens 2 days later. 11:59 deliver commences it is Tuesday on one side Wednesday on the other side. Delivery completes at 12:01 dateline is crossed it is now Wednesday from where you came and Thursday. Thursday is the day the baby is born. It does matter the time. I left it out cause you all would have been well confused. The only correct acceptable answer is Wednesday August 21, 2002. The full answer is depending on the time it can be either Wednesday August 21, 2002 or Thursday August 22, 2002. Hey if you can find the book, it is fabulous. Some are really tough. I did not know I caused such a thread of confusion. BTW I am from Australia and I travel to the US a lot so the answer makes sense to me. We are a day ahead of the US. Cheerio!
