Did Atlantis exist?

Many people have speculated that Atlantis existed, but it seems most likely that Plato invented the story as a background to illustrate his principles of Ethics.

Atlantis probably existed. The legend (if that's all it is) certainly existed long before Plato. In fact Plato heard it from Solon who was told the tale by the Egyptian priesthood whilst in Egypt. It may be hard to identify however, even if it is/has been discovered. The best reference I know of is 'Gateway to Atlantis' by Andrew Collins (forward by the illustrious David Rohl) published by Headline Book Publishers in 2000.
