Almost exactly 55 years of age (about a month more, and assuming you consider the first taking of office for those who held several). The oldest was Reagan (70) and the youngest Teddy Roosevelt (43). Bill Clinton was 47.

The average age for a President to take office is 54.8 years old. The median age is 55. Eight men became President in their 40's, 24 in their 50's, and 10 in their 60's. The average age of death is 71 years old (assassinated Presidents not counted).
As of Sunday, September 22, 2002 -- A quick sketch of American Vice Presidents. There have been 46; 40 have gone to their reward; six are with us still. Their average age on taking the oath was 54. The youngest, at 36, was John C. Breckinridge, No. 2 to James Buchanan. Harry S. Truman's running mate, Alben W. Barkley, was the oldest at 71. Seven died in office.
