There are two competing nervous systems which control the metabolism of the human body. Either may dominate the other, but neither may overrule the other. The sympathetic system gives priority to muscular activity, and allows the heart and lungs to operate at faster than the average, but it does not supports routine bodily functions like digestion and peristalsis (bowel movement). The parasympathetic system does the precise opposite, promoting digestion whilst giving no support to the cardio-pulmonary (heart/lungs) system. If you exercise on an empty stomach, the parasympathetic system recognises that digestion is not required and allows the sympathetic system to dominate, thereby routing oxygen to the heart, lungs and exercising muscles and even facilitating the release of adrenaline. Exercising on a full stomach places your body in a quandry. The parasympathetic system has sensed that priority must be given to digestion. But you are consciously trying to overrule that decision. The consequence is that the sympathetic system, which has been suppressed, is unable to supply the energy reserves which your exercise requires. At best exercise is extremely {uncomfortable;} at worst you will get cramps in the limbs you are exercising, no matter what the exercise. If you are swimming you are now in big trouble.
