What is the Northernmost city in the US, and then, the world?

    Question #21797. Asked by geoman.

    Brainy Blonde

The northern most city in the US is Barrow, Alaska at 71%B007%B4 north latitude. See:
    http://www.teach-at-home.com/fastfacts/FactsFigures/USAfacts.asp

Hammerfest - the northernmost town in the world.
The city lies 70%B0 39' 48' north and achieved its town status on the 7th of July
1789, making it the oldest town in northern Norway. See:
    http://www.hammerfest.kommune.no/english.html
The above statement taken from the website above is contradictory. I calls itself
a city once and a town 3 times. In fact, it gives the date it became a town.
Where I come from there is a difference between a city and a town.

Guinness World Records says the following:
Dikson, Russia is the northern most town at 73.5 degrees north and 80.4 degrees
    east.
Ny Alesund on King's Bay, Vest Spitsbergen, in the Norwegian territory of Svalbard
is the most northern village at 78 degrees 55' north.
Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland is the most northern capital at 64 degrees
    06' north.
Alert Bay, on Dumb Bell Bay, on the northeast coast of Ellesmere Island, Canada
is the most northern place with permanent human occupation at 82 degrees 31' north.

Technically, Reykjavik is the only city of the places named, so it is the most
northern city in the world. Unless, Hammerfest has in fact incorporated itself
    into a city.

Northernmost City, US: Point Barrow, Alaska, population 2,508
Northernmost City, World: Longyearbyen, located on Svalbard, an island of Norway, population 1,739

If Barrow, Alaska can count as a city with only 2,500 people, I think Longyearbyen should at least be considered as well.

Longyearbyen is not city, they themselves call it a community. Barrow was
incorporated into a city in 1958. Even if Longyearbyen were a city, it would
    still be south of Barrow.
    Geographic Latitude, 69%B035' N 69.5847%B0
    http://www.eiscat.com/locations.html

Barrow is positioned 71.26 degrees north of the equator and 156.80 degrees west
    of the prime meridian.
