According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, the word tattoo, as the indelible marking of the skin, is one of the few English words from Polynesia. It derives from the Tahitian tatau, meaning a mark, and was introduced by Captain Cook in 1769. There is no indication as to when tattoos were first introduced but they must go back a very long way.
